The Agency says that 31 sets of construction sites before the break with a further 30 have been completed works, suspended between December and January 2.

Announcement of the suspensions, Director of network operations Derek Turner said: "over the Christmas and new year holidays people use our motorways and A roads to visit friends and family, go Christmas shopping and vital deliveries to shops and businesses across the country."

"The Highways Agency will make these journeys smoother by exposure as many sets of construction sites, as we can, and up-to-the-minute travel plan advice."

Earlier this week, the RAC Foundation warned to enable driver for heavier loads, long distances and bad weather over Christmas.

"Those with family and friends often scattered across the country are overwhelmed at Christmas," said Research Assistant Fiona Coyne.

Advised drivers plenty of time to their destination, reach to leave add: "keeping to a strict no alcohol rule is a definitive must this Christmas for the designated driver."

And on the rail network operators have a scheduler, detail closures and changes over Christmas and new year.
