New vehicle registrations again

The number of new cars registered in February by just under 22% over the previous year fell, has said the motor manufacturers and traders (SMMT) of the company.

The decline was less than the 30.9% drop for January and February is one of the slowest months for new car sales.

However the SMMT still expected turnover for the year 2009 a fifth down on 2008's numbers, and has reiterated its call for more government aid, in particular for a Scrappage scheme, which would take older cars off the road and encourage new sales call.

"Car new registrations continue to decline and although [the] Government recognizes the strategic importance of the UK automotive industry, urgent action is still required," said SMMT Chief Executive Paul Everitt.

"Other European countries have been proactive in promoting their automotive industry and it is imperative that the British Government regulation and access to finance and credit raised the speed in responding to industry proposals for a Scrappage."

Last week, alleged car dealer group the retail motor Association that the Government was "very close indeed" looking on a Scrappage system.

New car sales for February fell across all categories except the fuel-saving mini segment that saw strong growth again: a 47.3% year-on-year increase.
