Apr 24, Horrible accident.

by Carissa
(Reno, Nevada, United States)

I was driving on a gravel road going 60 mph when I began to go too far to the right. The car began to freak out as I tried to steer left but I ended up over correcting it and my car slid, hit the ditch on the right, cleared 40 ft., hit another ditch, and rolled 3 times. By the time it stopped rolling it landed completely upside down. I got out of the car and walked a little less then half a mile home. As I got home there were paramedics and cops at my house. Thy said I was lucky to even be alive. They checked everything and it all seemed to be fine. It's 4 days later and I have no real major pain. But I'm wondering if I should go to the hospital? After all I should be dead...

Hi there, Michelle here...

So. Nope at this point you should not go to the hospital. Even though this was a big and scary accident, if you have no symptoms and no pain, what would you get by going to the hospital?

The doctors will ask you what hurts, you will say nothing. The doctors will ask why you are there and you will say because I was in an accident and the paramedics checked me out and thought I was fine, but I wanted to come in anyway? Nope. The hospital will not be the place.

I would recommend you go to your regular doctor for a follow up visit. Tell her or him about the accident, that you don't seem to have any pain, that the paramedics checked things out, and you just wanted to have a follow up appointment to make sure nothing important was missed in the process of being checked out.

If you do develop pain, you will want to seek out a chiropractor and have treatments for your pain through this doctor. Otherwise, I am so glad to hear you survived such a terrible and scary accident.

Gravel roads are notorious for causing flip over accidents as the gravel grips the tires on the side of the road, they lose traction and the driver over steers to correct the slide or feeling of being grabbed, and just-like-that the car rolls. Super common and so scary.

Be well, hope this helps, M.
